On Thursday, 5 June, a new board for the University of Tartu Student Union (UTSU) was elected during a meeting of the student parliament. The new board will take office on 1 July for a two-year term. Eneken Riin Salong will lead the student union, supported by vice presidents Anet Ilustrumm and Rando Simson.

Eneken Riin Salong, a student on the bachelor’s programme in Government and Politics, is the University of Tartu’s representative at the General Assembly of the Federation of Estonian Student Unions. She has served as a student representative at both the institute and faculty level since 2024. She approaches the upcoming term with anticipation and enthusiasm. “First, I want to settle into the role – to take over the baton from the outgoing board and also meet with former board members to discuss how they see the current state of UTSU and the university. Since studies do not stop, Rando, Anet and I will also set aside some time before the start of July to finish our final coursework,” she said.

The vice president responsible for study quality is Anet Ilustrumm, a student on the bachelor’s programme in Mathematical Statistics. She has been serving as an institute-level student representative since 2023 and as a faculty representative since 2024. Looking ahead to the next two years, she expects both challenges and rewarding experiences. “To begin with, I will try to get a clearer understanding of the full scope of the vice president’s responsibilities. After that, I would like to start building a network of class representatives,” she said.

The vice president for development, Rando Simson, is a student on the bachelor’s programme in History. He has been an institute and faculty-level student representative since 2024. According to Rando, one of the board’s first tasks will be to draft a general action plan so that they can hit the ground running in September. “Our goal is to establish a good relationship with institute-level student representatives so that they feel involved and part of the wider representation structure,” he said.
