To ensure the continuity of the national university, we must take responsibility to pass on and uphold the intellectual heritage of the national university.

With the annual awards, the university aims to recognise its employees’ and students’ outstanding achievements in teaching, doing research and serving society.

The Board of the University of Tartu Student Union urges fair, transparent handling of harassment cases, prioritizing victim safety and ensuring all students and staff feel safe and respected.

On 27 October from 13–18, the University of Tartu development conference “A university for us, Estonia and the world” took place in the university assembly hall and online. Keynote speakers were Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Kersti Kaljulaid and Kristina Kallas.

The University of Tartu has a Student Union (UTSU) of nearly 140 members, which has been steadfastly standing for students’ rights and solving their concerns for years. Full of initiative, student representatives have brought numerous ideas to life within the university and drawn attention to various institutional shortcomings.

During the Peeter Tulviste memorial week held from 27 October to 2 November, a memorial conference takes place in the university assembly hall, and the exhibition “Bibliophile Peeter Tulviste” opens at the university library.

Järgmine Tartu Ülikooli üliõpilasesinduse (TÜÜE) üliõpilasorganisatsioonide arengufondi taotluste esitamise tähtaeg on 21. september. Toetusfondist saab raha taotleda mitmesuguste ürituste ja koolituste korraldamiseks.

Until 31 October, nominations can be submitted for the “Contribution to Estonian National Identity” award.

All university staff and students are invited to nominate candidates who deserve to be awarded the university’s honorary decoration for their outstanding achievements.

All in all, there are 16,052 students at the university.

The mentoring programme that has been popular in the previous years will be held again this autumn semester.

This year, 10,808 people applied for first and second-level studies at the University of Tartu, submitting 14,863 applications.

On 16 June, the council of the University of Tartu approved the new strategic plan, which sets the direction for the university’s activities for the next ten years.

Anette-Mai Pirk-Birk has served as the Student Representative and Vice President at the University of Tartu for two years, including a year and a half as Co-President. Her involvement with the student union has provided her with a unique perspective on the academic and student experience, especially through her active participation in international networks like ENLIGHT. All students, staff and alumni of the University of Tartu are invited to respond to a physical activity survey of the University of Tartu Academic Sports Club until 20 June.

The University of Tartu’s opening ceremony of the 2025/2026 academic year will take place on the corner of Lossi and Ülikooli streets at Pirogov square on Monday, 1 September at 10:00.

All Estonian public universities will celebrate Diversity Week from 5–11 May for the second year. This year’s focus is on encouraging people to notice and to act.
