National University Anniversary Ball

In 1919, the National University was born, marking the beginning of the independence of the Estonian education system and laying the foundation for higher education in Estonian. Every year on December 1, a ceremony, torchlight procession and festive ball are held to celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the Estonian-language University of Tartu.

Since 1920, the National University Ball has been organised by the University of Tartu Student Union (Edustus in the early years). Traditionally, the ball is held at the Vanemuine Concert Hall, and the atmosphere, program and performers of the event have helped make it one of the most anticipated events of the year for students, alumni and the entire academic family. Over the years, thousands of guests have attended the ball, and many beloved artists have performed on stage: the audience has been delighted by, for example, Anne Veski, Karl-Erik Taukar, Estraadiraadio with Ott Lepland and Kaire Vilgats, and many others.

Celebrating the anniversary of the National University is not just a party, but a tribute to the history, achievements and vision of the university for the future. Traditions that began over a century ago live on thanks to the keepers of the university’s academic and cultural heritage. As part of the university’s rich history, the ball symbolises the connection between the past and the future – a value that has been at the heart of the spirit of the University of Tartu for over a hundred years.
